Reconstruction of lower-limb deformities resulting from metabolic bone disease is a challenging task for the orthopaedic surgeon. Although the issues can be addressed by the use of an external fixator alone, this method has been associated with many complications. Pin-site infection, refracture, nonunion, malunion, and loss of alignment have been reported in many series. In order to reduce these complications, the authors used an external fixator in combination with an intramedullary nail. This method allows for earlier removal of the external fixator while the intramedullary nail protects the regenerated bone from angulation and displacement. This video supplement to the authors JBJS retrospective study summarizes the surgical technique.
