Although a large number of clinical studies have been published on ankle arthroscopy, there is little information available on the subtalar joint. Dr. Richard Ferkel of the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute in Van Nuys, California, renowned for his expertise in ankle arthroscopy, recently completed a study and presented his results in the first 50 patients undergoing subtalar arthroscopy at the 1995 Arthroscopy Association of North America Meeting.
The study examines potential diagnostic and therapeutic benefits of subtalar arthroscopy. The procedure is technically demanding and is still in its early stages of development. However, as knowledge of subtalar pathology and small-joint instruments technology expands, the treatment of subtalar problems will be better treated by the experienced arthroscopist.
In this special report, Dr. Ferkel describes the anatomy of the subtalar joint, leads the viewer through a reproducible arthroscopic examination to determine appropriate treatment and then demonstrates his surgical technique for excision of the os trigonum.
