In the early 1980s, the Copeland cementless surface replacement arthroplasty, a surface replacement designed specifically for use in arthritic shoulders, was introduced. This prosthesis replaces only the damaged joint-bearing surface of the humeral head and restores anatomy with minimal bone resection. In studies, the results of hemiarthroplasty are similar to those of total shoulder replacement and it has become the procedure of choice for treatment of advanced arthritis of the shoulder at many medical institutions.
