In this VJO New Development video, Roger H. Emerson Jr., MD, performs an anterior, supine intermuscular (ASI) total hip arthroplasty. The ASI hip approach is truly minimally invasive since no muscles are cut during exposure. Potential patient benefits include a rapid return to activities postoperatively and lessened muscle atrophy (versus the posterior approach). In addition, the risk of hip dislocation is minimized since the posterior soft tissue sling that supports the hip is less disturbed.
