Lawrence D. Dorr, MD, medical director and founder, Dorr Arthritis Institute in Inglewood, Calif., discusses highly cross-linked polyethylene vs. conventional polyethylene liners in this JBJS video supplement to his August, 2005 article. In addition, he demonstrates his preferred surgical technique for primary total hip arthroplasty utilizing a small incision and computer-assisted navigation. “We feel that this incision reduces pain and increases function earlier. With the traditional incisions, our average discharge time was 5 days postoperative. With the small incisions, our discharge time is no more than 48 hours. And, computer-assisted navigation enables me to position the implants with greater precision.”
