Avascular necrosis, or AVN, of the hip joint affects primarily young adults and accounts for more than ten percent of all hip replacement procedures. In young and active patients any total hip prosthetic replacement is unlikely to equal the longevity of the patient, and revision surgery is likely.

Much attention therefore is being directed towards procedures such as femoral resurfacing, which buys younger patients time before total hip arthroplasty is required.

Dr. Harlan C. Amstutz is considered among his colleagues to be one of the foremost joint replacement surgeons in the world. For over twenty-five years, Dr. Amstutz and his associates have endeavored to develop conservative techniques and prostheses which do not compromise future surgery. In this segment of the VJO, Dr. Amstutz provides an overview of the development of his newest resurfacing prosthesis.

Dr. John M. Cuckler routinely performs surface replacement on his younger, more active patients exhibiting Stage III AVN. In clips from surgery filmed by his staff at UAB, Dr. Cuckler describes his surgical technique with tips and pearls which contribute to a satisfactory outcome.

As an additional highlight, viewers can observe the follow-up exam of one of Dr. Cuckler's patients who underwent a femoral resurfacing procedure earlier in the year.
