Basal Joint Arthroplasty: An Innovative Approach to Eliminating Chronic Pain in the Hand

Andrew J. Weiland, M.D.

Material Covered:

Dr. Andrew Weiland demonstrates his approach to basal joint arthroplasty and ligament reconstruction. The trapezium is removed and a portion of the flexor carpi radialis is used to suspend the thumb metacarpal. The procedure eliminates chronic pain caused by basal joint arthritis. However, unlike arthrodesis, which also eliminates the pain but leaves the joint stiff, the ligament suspension used by Dr. Weiland preserves range of motion in the thumb with relatively little loss of pinch strength.
