Material Covered: The result of the treatment of distal radius fractures often leaves much to be desired. Controversy and confusion are found throughout the medical literature about the best way to treat a fracture of the distal radius.
Dr. Robert M. Szabo, of the University of California Davis in Sacramento, believes osteotomy should be considered to treat deformities of the distal radius if the dorsal angulation is twenty-five degrees greater than the normal wrist and if there is significant shortening of the radius. This amount of deformity usually results in a symptomatic patient. However, the procedure is technically demanding and a meticulous preoperative plan is essential to a successful outcome.
