Minimally Open Carpal Tunnel Release

James W. Strickland, M.D.

Material Covered:

Carpal tunnel release is one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the United States. The procedure is performed by orthopaedic, hand, plastic, neuro and general surgeons.

Several methods of carpal tunnel release are currently in use, including open, endoscopic and short incisional procedures. In this segment, Dr. James W. Strickland, of the Indiana Hand Center, demonstrates his minimally open technique for decompression of the carpal tunnel, described as a compromise between the endoscopic and open methods.

The procedure incorporates all of the best features of the endoscopic and limited open methods and can be performed through a very short palmar incision. Results are comparable to endoscopic methods with less cost, fewer complications and a high level of parity satisfaction.
