Intramedullary Nailing of Humeral Shaft Fractures with a Locking Flexible Nail

James P. Stannard, M.D.

Closed intramedullary stablization of a humeral shaft fracture with the use of a new, flexible, locking nail can avoid the problems of traditional osteosynthesis with a compression plate. The new nail is implanted in the humerus in either a retrograde or an antegrade manner without violating the rotator cuff mechanism or damaging the articular surface of the humeral head. The device has a low complication rate and has yielded excellent results in terms of union, alignment, and shoulder function. In this JBJS Video Supplement, James P. Stannard, M.D., demonstrates his surgical technique and explains the unique features of this new device.
