Modified Access for Repair of Elbow Adhesive Capsulitis

Robert P. Nirschl, M.D.

Material Covered:

Traditional repair of elbow adhesive capsulitis -- with access to the joint through the antecubital fossa or posterior to the lateral epicondyle -- carries with it significant surgical risk. An alternative exposure followed by surgeons at the Virginia Sports Medicine Institute, Arlington, Virginia, and the Arlington Hospital, a Georgetown University Medical School affiliate teaching institution, appears to reduce the risk while providing good access to more accurately address adhesions adherent to the anterior wall of the humerus.

Dr. Nirschl explains how this technique is based on the exposure used for tennis elbow. He also discusses modified postoperative protocols that place the arm in full extension.
