Material Covered:

Most advances in the prevention of venous thrombo-embolic disease during total joint arthroplasty have been in the postoperative period instead of intra-operatively - when the risk of thrombogenesis is at it's greatest. At Summit Hospital in Oakland, California, Doctor "Mac" Reynolds utilizes a device using pressurized dry carbon dioxide gas to clean and dry the prepared bony surfaces prior to cement implantation. He demonstrates the use of the device in this video presentation and explains why it can reduce the incidence of postoperative deep-vein thrombosis.

  • Literature review on the risk of postoperative deep-vein thrombosis
  • Traditional prophylactic measures to reduce risks
  • Carbon dioxide lavage: results of laboratory testing
  • Bony surface preparation and cleaning for THA
  • Bony surface preparation and cleaning for TKA
  • Indications/Contraindications
