Intraoperative Blood Conservation Techniques

Carl L. Nelson, M.D.

Material Covered:

Dr. Nelson is well known for his efforts to reduce intraoperative blood loss in major elective orthopaedic procedures. In the mid-1980s, he demonstrated in Jehovah's Witness patients that a range of techniques can significantly reduce intraoperative bleeding, precluding the need for transfusion. In this video segment, Dr. Nelson's discussion includes both technical tips and suggestions for a stylized surgical approach that emphasizes precision and efficiency. He emphasizes the role of anesthesia in controlling bleeding and profiles key steps during implant surgery where clear communication with the anesthesiologist is vital. Newer technologies that are presented include hemodynamic monitoring, which may help surgeons better access patients intraoperatively.
