Arthroscopic Ankle Arthrodesis: Employing a Unique Soft-Tissue Distraction Technique

Material Covered: Dr. James Tasto is currently employing a method of arthroscopic ankle arthrodesis that involves soft tissue distraction, arthroscopic abrasion, creation of vascular channels, and percutaneous screw fixation. This technique has been developed to reduce overall morbidity, improve patient comfort, and reduce the overall time to complete fusion. By employing a two-screw fixation technique, Dr. Tasto feels that he has obtained stable fixation, avoided screw encroachment on the subtalar joint, and created enough freedom for rapid coaptation of the joint surfaces.
By combining the arthroscopic procedure with the early use of an AFO and allowing the patient full weight bearing, the rehabilitation process has been accelerated, proprioception enhanced, and a much earlier return to work achieved.
